Different types of engines used in the cars

Hello guys, welcome to MechGeni, In this post we are going to see about the types of Engines used cars and many automobiles nowadays.

First let me explain

What is an Engine?

In simple words, An engine is a machine which is designed to convert one form of energy into mechanical energy.

The engines are broadly classified into Two main types

  1. Internal Combustion engine
  2. External Combustion engine

Among these, we are only using internal combustion engine nowadays in cars and in all automobiles , So based on the technological updates now we are going to see about the different types of engines used in Cars and also in many automobiles nowadays.

Types of engines used in Automobiles nowadays

Some of the types of Engines which are used in nowadays are

  • Inline engines
  • Straight engines
  • V engines
  • Boxer engine
  • Vo engines
  • W engines

Inline engines

Inline engines are the most common type of engines used in modern cars. In the type of inline engines the cylinders are arranged in a line that are facing upwards and are usually (normal) perpendicular angle to the car.

This type of engines are found more in family of hatchbacks and small of cars these engines are available in wide variety of configuration from a two cylinder engine to a six cylinder.

Straight engines

Straight engine is basically the same as an inline engine but the cylinders are positioned in parallel with the car from front to back as opposed to across the engine bay. This layout of engine is mostly using premium cars usually in rear-wheel drive cause these engines were present in wide variety of configuration from a four cylinder to six cylinders number.

V engines

The name itself of this type of engines are viewing that the engine from the front side the cylinders are arranged in a V-shape each bank of cylinders faces outwards and connects a common crankshaft at the base of the V.  This strain is generally reserved for premium and performance, high cost because due to a snail. In this type we can place a higher displacement engine with more cylinders into smaller space. There are wide variety of configuration of V engines from six cylinder to 12-cylinder engines.

Boxer engines

Boxer engines are also known as flat or a horizontally opposed engine. The cylinders are laid down on the side in two banks pointing away from each other. This type of engines helps to keep the centre of gravity usually low to benefit the handling. These engines are known for their distinctive sound. And there is only two car companies that are currently using boxer engines, they are Porsche and Subaru.

Vo engines

This type was developed by the Volkswagen Group it uses a similar principle 2v engines. But the distance between two cylinder rows are so narrow and it is squeezed together in one engine.

Many models blocked these engines and are rarely used now and are only used in some of the VW cars.

W engines

W engine is basically a two V engines which are joined together at the based performer with W configuration. These type of engines are only used in ultra luxury and in high performance cars like in some Bentley models and in Bugatti Veyron and the new sheriff.

Conclusion

That's all guys for this now, I hope you guy found it interesting and tell me in the comment below that “which is your favourite type of engine” looking excited to see which is the most liked type of engine.
