EXTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE:

Hello guys, in this sparking day we are going to expalin about the category of  external combustion engine and Classification with examples.

External Combustion engine
So now,

What is an External Combustion engine?

External combustion engine
(Steam engine invented by James Watt)

Like Internal combustion engine(IC engine) the external combustion engine is an category of heat engine. It is also shortly known as EC engine. In this type of heat engine the working fluid or fuel or gas present inside the cylinder is heated by an external heat supplying source through which the heat is passed to the engine wall or heat exchanging element. Then the fuel or fluid is expanded by the heat which is applied at engine wall or at heat exchanging element to carry out the mechanism of engine by producing motion and other usable work. After this process the working fluid is cooled and compressed and reused incase closed cycle engine or dumped outside incase of open cycle engine.

Types of external combustion engine:

There are two basic kinds of External combustion engine
1. Steam engine
2. Stirling engine

Steam engines:

Steam engines were the oldest type of engine used to produce power for vehicles in the olden days, The best example for the use of steam engine is steam train. These steam trains get power by using steam engine for motion of the train. It is the exact place where the steam engines were used in large scales, but due to the invention of diesel engine the steam engine became out of usage. This is because the loss of energy in steam engine is much greater when compared to that of diesel engines. Especially the amoubt of heat loss on the way from the boiler to the piston is more. Also these engines are bulk in size and produce low work to power ratio so because of these reasons the usage of the steam engine was reduced nowadays. However still these steam engines are used in power stations.

Stirling engines:

Stirling engines are also one the categories of external combustion engines. Like steam engines these engines also have a low power-to-weight ratio as well, but theoretically, these engines are capable of  reaching high levels of efficiency. A lot of research is being in process for how the actual efficiency of these engines could be improved, these engines may also have a great potential in future when we use more renewable energy sources.

Differences between Internal and External Combustion Engines:

The main difference between the internal and external combustion engine occurs in place where the Combustion occurs.
  • In internal combustion(IC) engines the combustion takes place inside the cylinder where the working fluid or fuel is present.
  • But in case of an external combustion(EC) engines, the combustion takes place outside the cylinder. The heat will be transferred into the working fluid with the help of an heat exchanger or throughthe engine wall.

Conclusion:

Here is all EXTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE.
