Vernier caliper with its parts

Vernier caliper and its types

Hello mechons, in this post we are going to see about the simple measurement device named "vernier caliper". Here We will explain you about what is Vernier caliper, what are the types of vernier caliper, parts of the vernier caliper and applications of the vernier caliper.

Ok, first let me start with

What is vernier caliper?

A vernier caliper is a device used to measure inner and outer diameters, length, depth, thickness of the object. In vernier caliper a vernier scale will be there which is the aid to increase accurate level of this device by taking readings between two graduation markings on a linear scale by mechanical interpolation. Also it reduces the uncertainty of the measurement and error of estimation.

Parts of Vernier Caliper

Now, moving to the next part,

What are the parts of a vernier caliper?

So, There are six major parts of the vernier caliper. They are

      • Lower jaws
      • Upper jaws
      • Depth rod
      • Main scale
      • Vernier scale
      • Thumb screw
      • Lock Screw

Upper jaws

The upper jaws of the vernier are used for measuring the inner dimensions of objects such as pipes, tubes and cylinders. In upper jaws the one end is fixed with the main scale and the other end is free movable and attached with the vernier scale. To measure the inner dimensions it is placed inside the hole and expanded to measure.

Lower jaws

The most prominent part of the vernier caliper are the lower jaws. Like upper jaws in the lower jaws also one end is fixed with the main scale and the other jaw is free to move and it is attached with the vernier scale. The lower jaws of the vernier are used for measuring the outside dimensions such as height, length, width.

Depth rod

The depth rod is used to measure the depth of the holes or steps in the objects. It is very thin and located at the end of the main scale

The depth rod of a vernier is used for measuring the depth of holes.

Main scale

The main scale is the large stationary scale built along the body of the vernier caliper. Depending on the units used the main scale of the vernier is either nominated by centimeters and millimeters or by inches.

Vernier scale

The vernier scale is the smallest scale attached to the main scale of the caliper. It moves along the body of the main scale when the jaws are either opened or closed. This scale is used to increase the accuracy of the measurement because in the vernier scale the lowest level of the main scale is further divided into increments. The vernier scale is divided into 50 equal parts and each part representing 0.02 mm

Thumb screw

The thumb screw of the vernier is located at the bottom of the vernier scale. The main purpose of the thumbscrew is to provide grip for the user when moving the jaws. And it is also used in moving the jaws and depth rod while applying firm grip on the object

Lock screw

The lock screw is located in the upper position of the vernier. It is used for locking the object's position when it is placed properly. The purpose of providing the lock screw is after locking the object in a particular position the reader can take readings without any fear in the position of that object.

Types of vernier Caliper

Based on the standards the vernier calipers are classified into three types

Type A

In this type of caliper the jaws are present on both upper and lower ends for measuring internal and external measurements respectively. These types of calipers are generally made up of steels.

Types of vernier caliper 1
Type A

Type B

This type of vernier doesn't possess separate jaws for measuring internal and external measurements. It has only one set of jaws for both internal and external measurements.

Types of vernier caliper 2
Type B

Type C

This type is very similar to the type B, the main difference is the presence of the knife edge at the end. This type also doesn't possess separate jaws for measuring the internal and external measurements. The single set of jaw is used for measuring both the internal and external measurements.

Types of vernier caliper 3
Type C

Applications of vernier caliper:

  1. It is used to measure internal and external diameters of the objects .
  2. It is also used to measure length, breadth, thickness of the objects.
  3. It is used to measure the depth of the holes and steps of the objects.

Conclusion
